What’s in a name?
I thought it was about time that I let everyone else in on how we decided on our name. Firstly, we both love art. Secondly, we both have an intense love for the beauty of Scotland and Ireland. Anyway, on with the Story.
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” By William Shakespeare from ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
What is in a name? Well, times have changed and today names
give us a sense of something’s ability and a general background. A history if
you will.
The Pict Perspective, our name, and to a point a very brief
summary of who we are as a company, if you know something about the Picts that
is.
If not, well, let me break it down for you…
The Picts, possibly taken from the Latin ‘picti’ meaning
‘painted people’, were a distinct group of people believed to have lived in the
ancient parts of eastern and north-eastern Scotland.
They were known to be fierce warriors, whose women were
treated as equals, with a distinct culture and a belief in Pagan Gods and
Goddesses. What they called themselves however, is something we may never know,
as their name is what the Romans called them.
The Picts, as a people, gave the Romans a run for their
money. They may have lost some battles, but they won the war, as Scotland never
fell to the Romans.
So why did we, my sister and I, fixate on the Picts?
Well, Pict women were warriors, they painted themselves and
fought alongside the men in wars, and they went on hunts too. The Picts were
artists, yes they had quite an advanced social structure, but they artists as
evidenced by the Pict Stones found scattered through certain parts of Scotland.

Whilst searching for synonyms for the words ‘drawing’,
‘look’ and ‘idea/innovation’ I came across ‘Depict’ and ‘Perspective’. After
continuously checking out other words, I looked at my book and noticed how good
those looked and how great they sounded together. That caused a bit of a
tangent in my thinking, as I was reminded of something I had read not too long
before our search for a company name began. A search through “Wikipedia” for
“The Picts”, upon finding out more about these amazing people, I knew that my
search was over. You see, my sister and I both have a deep, intrinsic love for both
Scotland and Ireland.
So began “The Pict
Perspective”, a company that values art, in all its forms, with, hopefully,
a new way of looking at things. It is at this point that I must ask, “Can we
help you get a Pict Perspective?”
